Our Strategy

Hush Foundation 2025-2030 Strategic Plan

OUR PURPOSE

To transform the culture and experience of healthcare through evidence-based, arts-led programs that support healing, connection, and care for all.

OUR MISSION

Restoring the humanity in healthcare — empowering people through the arts and kindness to create cultures of care where staff and patients thrive together.

OUR VISION

A healthcare system where creativity, kindness, and clinical excellence work hand-in-hand – delivering care that is not only effective, but deeply human.

Background

The Hush Foundation was established in 2000 by Professor Catherine Crock AM, with a vision to reduce anxiety and distress in healthcare settings through the power of music. By inviting composers and musicians into hospitals to experience clinical environments firsthand, Hush inspired the creation of original music that brings calm, connection, and comfort to patients, families, and staff. Since then, Hush has collaborated with over 150 Australian composers and performers to produce 22 albums of music conceived and created to complement clinical care and surrounding contexts across Australia and beyond.

Over time, Hush expanded into supporting positive cultures in healthcare more broadly, with a vision focussed on promoting and enabling cultures of kindness – through arts based education, dialogues and reflective practice. In 2010 Hush produced three Health Plays, developed with playwright Alan Hopgood AM. These theatre-based programs have been performed more than 200 times internationally, fostering open dialogue around staff behaviour, wellbeing, and safety.

In 2016, Hush launched the Gathering of Kindness – a national movement using music, theatre, visual art and storytelling to promote respect, empathy, and human connection in healthcare. This initiative has reached over 60,000 people and inspired the #KindnessWorksHere campaign and, more recently, Kindness in Action – an interactive, online reflective practice learning tool launched in 2024.

Hush celebrated 25 years in 2025, and reaffirmed its commitment to connection, kindness, and respect – ensuring continued advocacy and practical impact and relevance in transforming healthcare culture through the arts.

Affirmed Identity

  • Core strength and key market differentiator lies in the unique integration of applied (as opposed to therapeutic) arts with healthcare.

  • Legacy and credibility built over 25 years through music, storytelling & education that is grounded, practical and relational, rather than abstract or top-down.

Applied Change

  • Emphasis on the importance of actionable and visible next steps to maintain momentum and deepen engagement.

  • Desired evolution from project-based delivery to systems-level change, ensuring Hush’s tools are embedded within health services, not just delivered to them.

Awareness

  • Renewed sense of purpose and alignment, demonstrating readiness among Board and Administration to co-own and activate change.

  • Support for strategic clarity, cross-sector partnerships, and a clear value proposition that connects Hush’s work to its outcomes and impact.

Actionable Areas

  • Consolidate and communicate Hush’s brand and identity more clearly across programs, materials, and digital platforms.

  • Build financial sustainability through diversified income streams including philanthropy, partnerships, fee-for-service models, and government investment.

  • Embed arts-based more deeply into clinical pathways (including education), leadership development, and staff wellbeing programs.
  • Goal #1 – Refine and align Hush’s unique Value Proposition

  • Goal #2 – Sustainable and Strategic Product Development

  • Goal #3 – Build Partnerships and Profile

  • Goal #4 – Pursue Philanthropic Funds and Grant Opportunities

  • Goal #5 – Establish Hush as a Sustainable Organisation

The Hush Foundation’s breadth of reach is a key strategic asset. It affirms the relevance and resonance of Hush’s mission across the healthcare ecosystem and creates multiple avenues for impact, collaboration, and advocacy. However, it also requires a considered approach to ensure focus is maintained on our core strength: the development and delivery of arts-based modalities that drive meaningful change.

To achieve this, the Hush Foundation must:

  • Prioritise engagement where it most directly supports the creation, delivery, and application of arts-oriented activity.

  • Leverage cross-sector relationships (e.g. clinicians, philanthropy, corporate, artists, research, education) to scale our work without overstretching internal resources.

  • Tailor communications and partnership models to the needs of different audience segments, ensuring alignment with Hush’s mission while preserving organisational sustainability.

  • Use data and insight from a diverse audience base to inform future program development.
